Facing the New York Knicks seems to bring out the best in the Philadelphia 76ers.
Philadelphia tries to sweep the season series with New York for the first time in 23 years Friday night when it concludes a four-game road trip. The Sixers (28-28) have shot 54.4 percent and averaged 113.0 points in winning the first three meetings with New York (24-33) this season. They've won 12 of the last 14 in the series and are a victory away from sweeping the Knicks for the first time since 1985-86, when they took all six matchups.
Philadelphia has a good chance to continue its high-scoring ways against the Knicks, who have allowed 12 of their last 13 opponents to score 104 or more points. They've given up 114.7 in losing two of their last three.
The Sixers are also coming off their best offensive performance in two weeks. They shot 50.0 percent in a 106-98 win over Washington on Wednesday night after making 38.8 percent of their attempts and averaging 91.8 points during a season high-tying four-game losing streak.
Andre Iguodala had 22 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds Wednesday to lead six Sixers in double-figure scoring.
"I can always feel it. I felt it in the first quarter that I was coming together," said Iguodala, averaging a team-high 17.8 points. "I just told myself to just continue to play and try to make plays for everybody."
The win came two days after Philadelphia lost 98-96 to New Jersey on a half-court buzzer-beater.
"That was an important game for us just to get back on track," said coach Tony DiLeo, who improved to 19-14 since taking over for the fired Maurice Cheeks in December.
Philadelphia moved into sole possession of sixth place in the Eastern Conference, where the Knicks sit in 11th and are 2 1/2 games behind Milwaukee for the final playoff spot.
New York, which hasn't been to the postseason since 2003-04, couldn't contain Orlando All-Star center Dwight Howard in a 114-109 loss Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.
Howard had 24 points, 21 rebounds and four blocked shots against the Knicks, who got a team-high 32 points from Nate Robinson off the bench.
Robinson recorded his fifth 30-point game in the last seven, and is averaging 29.8 points in five contests since beating Howard to win his second slam dunk contest at All-Star weekend.
"They made shots," Robinson said. "They got Dwight down there. He does a great job of bringing so much attention to himself. Guys are just making shots. For the most part, we played hard. They walked away with the win."
The undersized Knicks will now have to contend with the inside play of a Philadelphia team that has averaged 48.7 rebounds and held them to 37.3 in the first three meetings.
The difference in those games, however, was the play of the shortest Sixer in the starting lineup.
Andre Miller is averaging 22.7 points, 7.0 assists and 5.7 rebounds against New York this season. The 6-foot-2 point guard has scored 20.3 points per game in his last four contests overall.
