New York Knicks Getting Inside 2009-11-25

New York Knicks Getting Inside 2009-11-25Eddy Curry's flagrant foul against Rajon Rondo in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to the Celtics was upgraded by the NBA to a flagrant 2. But while the league frowned upon Curry's physical show of frustration -- he shoved the rebounding Rondo in the back after Curry missed a power-up against Kendrick Perkins -- the Knicks had to secretly like the rare display of intensity from their often stoic big man.

Consider this part of the Eddy Curry Renaissance. Along with notable weight loss came some notable gains in passion for the game. Curry said he is trying to "change it up, bring some fire and just try to be a force out there."

Though the Rondo situation was, as he admitted, "a bonehead play," Curry did have another moment when he went face-to-face last week with Pacers center Solomon Jones after the two were tangled up on the post.

"I never in my career have been this rah-rah kind of player, someone who gets in someone's face," Curry said. "I pretty much just kind of fly under the radar and kind of play my position. I'm just trying to change it a little."

Again, it's not that the Knicks want Curry to put up the fake tough-guy front. But it's refreshing to see some competitive juices flowing. Mike D'Antoni, who really has never coached Curry before, says he mostly appreciates what he sees and hears from Curry on the bench.

"He's up cheering," D'Antoni said. "That's really good to see. You can see that he's really into it, his whole persona is good. I've never coached him, but right now he's terrific on and off the court."

Curry has hit somewhat of a conditioning wall four games into his comeback, which is to be expected of someone who played only 11 minutes of game time over the past year and lost 50 pounds. He has made just 7 of 18 from the floor for a 5.3 points-per-game average with 2.5 rebounds in 11:29 per game. He also tweaked his left knee, which makes him questionable for Wednesday's game at Sacramento.

But D'Antoni is slowly trying to incorporate Curry's post-up game into a revamped offense that is changing on the fly to better fit the roster of expiring contracts -- that is, players -- on the team this season. And, obviously, getting Curry back to where he can be a dominant force on the post is of utmost importance to the Knicks, who hope to trade Curry before the summer to clear his $11.2 million salary off the 2010-11 salary cap and allow the team to offer two max contracts in free agency.

LAKERS 100, KNICKS 90: The Knicks held a 41-40 lead with 3:26 left in the second quarter before the Lakers roared into halftime on a 15-4 run. They then broke through for 17 straight points in a seven-minute stretch of the third quarter to break the game wide open. Kobe Bryant scored 34 points for the Lakers (11-3), while Wilson Chandler and Nate Robinson each had 15 for the Knicks (3-11), who have lost two straight after consecutive wins.
