New York Knicks Notes, Quotes 2009-09-19

New York Knicks Notes, Quotes 2009-09-19--F Danilo Gallinari declared himself "ready to go" after an offseason rehabilitating from season-ending back surgery in March. The sixth overall pick from 2008 appeared in just 28 games last season because of the back injury, but even in his brief appearances the Italian swingman showed flashes of great potential. Gallinari spent most of the summer strengthening his back and core muscles and did not begin full-court scrimmaging until late August. But at 6-10, with dynamic passing and shooting skills and a penchant for attacking the rim, Gallinari has the Knicks hoping he can blossom quickly into a key player this season.

--C Eddy Curry's offseason regimen with two outsourced trainers ended on August 31 and he had reportedly cut his weight down to 318 pounds -- 40 pounds lighter than what he weighed at the end of the season. He joined his teammates at the MSG Training Center in September for pre-camp workouts and there is a great deal of anticipation in how he will fit into D'Antoni's high-energy, spread offense. There is also a belief that if Curry, who appeared in just two games last season because of weight and conditioning issues, can show enough positive steps, the Knicks may be able to trade him and clear his $11.2 million salary off the 2010-11 payroll, which could allow the team to target two max contract free agents in 2010.

--Knicks President of Basketball Operations Donnie Walsh called Pacers owner Mel Simon, who passed away on Sept. 16, "a force of nature" and "a one-of-a-kind type of guy." Simon in 1984 handed the title of general manager to Walsh, who then built the Pacers into one of the model franchises of the NBA over the next quarter century.

"He was one of the most intelligent men I have met and loved in basketball," Walsh said. "I will miss him."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I want to see the expectations. I want to feel the pressure because that's what makes you a really good player." -- F Danilo Gallinari, on finally being healthy after his rookie season was marred by back trouble.
