New York Knicks Notes, Quotes 2009-11-07

New York Knicks Notes, Quotes 2009-11-07--Donnie Walsh admitted that he and his scouting staff might have made a mistake in the draft by passing on rookie Brandon Jennings, who is off to a terrific start with the Milwaukee Bucks. Walsh said he "did not have a feel for Brandon Jennings' game" and pointed out that the team tried to scout the 19-year-old, who last season jumped from high school to the pro game in Europe rather than play in college.

Walsh and his scouts planned to see Jennings in a Eurobasket camp in May, but Jennings did not participate. The Knicks brought Jennings in for a pre-draft workout at the MSG Training Center and, though he more than held his own against fellow prospect Tyreke Evans, Walsh was hesitant.

"I had him in and he looked good," Walsh said. "But he looked young and had a lot ahead of him... I still am glad we took Jordan Hill, but I think Brandon Jennings is going to be a good player. And he's getting an opportunity to play, so it's a tough comparison now, because Jordan is not."

Hill did play against the Cavaliers. In 4:46, he scored six points with two turnovers, all in the second quarter.

--Walsh also made note that C Eddy Curry is "very close" to being brought back to practice with the team. Curry has been on a team-ordered fitness exile after he injured his calf on the first day of training camp.

Curry, who played in only two games last season because of knee and conditioning issues, spent the summer working out with trainers and lost as much as 40 pounds, but he showed up at camp still not in basketball shape. The 7-foot, 300-pound plus center is a key component this season because the team would love to trade him before the end of the year to clear the $11.2 million salary off next year's salary cap.

If Curry plays well enough to attract an offer and Walsh could deal him for an expiring contract, the Knicks could be in position to offer two max contracts next summer.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's just this building. This building is very special." -- LeBron James, on his 18-point performance in the first quarter against the Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
