DRAFT PICK:
Danilo Gallinari, SF, 6-9, Italy -- The fans weren't happy and he undoubtedly is a project, but the Knicks insist the 19-year-old is the real deal. BIGGEST NEEDS: Now that Chris Duhon is signed, the Knicks have a capable ball-handler to step in should they decide to let Stephon Marbury go. Since they aren't likely to deal Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph, it wouldn't hurt to bring in a big man who's known to be active defensively.
FREE AGENT FOCUS: Getting under the salary cap is a priority for new team president Donnie Walsh, but he's going to have to wait. He won't be shedding a lot of salary this summer by letting the likes of Fred Jones and Randolph Morris hit the free agent market.
PLAYER NOTES:
--G Stephon Marbury landed on Page Six of the New York Post with the other socialites. According to the report, he was sinking $45 million into his own private jet.
--F Danilo Gallinari took a couple of weeks off after he returned to Europe to play with the national team. A back injury suffered in Game 1 of summer league needed rest. He later decided not to play at all in Italy, but the Knicks are not concerned about him not being ready for next month.
--G Nate Robinson apparently can't get enough basketball. He joined a number of friends he met at the gym he frequents and played three summer league games at the Theodore Young Community Center in Greenburgh, N.Y., a local recreational center with a competitive men's league. He didn't play in the championship game, though, because of a commitment to play in a softball game.
