New York Knicks Roster Report 2009-10-16

New York Knicks Roster Report 2009-10-16Mike D'Antoni has been going through several lineup options in the preseason, so it is impossible to predict his choice for the starting five. In fact, with such an even group of players and no true standouts, he has suggested there could be games he changes his starters in relation to the opponent.

G Chris Duhon broke down physically in the second half last season and needs to prove he can be more durable. But at full strength, he looked to be a natural in this system.

G Wilson Chandler is a very versatile player who can defend just about every position. But the issue is whether he can handle the ball well enough to play the shooting guard position.

F Danilo Gallinari struggled with his shooting early in the preseason but there is little doubt that he will eventually be a key figure in the offense. It may be too much too soon for the 21-year-old Italian, but the Knicks need him to grow quickly.

F Al Harrington is out to prove in this contract year that he can be a go-to scorer and a team leader. The New Jersey native hopes the Knicks will re-sign him and he'll need a huge year to convince them.

C David Lee will once again spend some time playing as an undersized center, mainly because D'Antoni values his rebounding, smarts and ability to outrun other big men. Lee has a $1 million bonus if the team makes the playoffs, so he'll do whatever it takes as long as the team is successful.

G Nate Robinson will bring his usual game-changing energy and offensive volatility in the Sixth Man role and is expected to put more emphasis on defense, too. But can he control his emotions (12 technical fouls last season) and keep his game more focused on team and less on being a sideshow?

F/C Jared Jeffries may be viewed as a bad contract by Knicks fans, but D'Antoni values his versatility as a 6-11 player who can handle the ball and defend any position. Jeffries came to camp in great shape and has played very well and is expected to have a key role in D'Antoni's rotation, possibly as a starter.

C Darko Milicic gives the Knicks some much-needed size at 7-2, not to mention a defensive presence in the paint that they sorely lacked last season. The former No. 2 overall pick (2003) has the right kind of skill set for D'Antoni's system.

G Toney Douglas impressed the coaching staff with his defensive tenacity and instincts and an ability to score the ball. The rookie point guard has some work to do as a floor general, but will see immediate playing time.

C Eddy Curry (calf muscle tear) will be kept in exile working out with team trainers until he is ready to practice at 100 percent. It is likely he won't be with the team until the end of camp, which means he'll have to work his way into Mike D'Antoni's rotation.
