DRAFT PICKS:
Jordan Hill, PF, 6-10, Arizona (first round, 8th overall) -- An athletic big with a good perimeter touch. Mike D'Antoni sees similarities to a young Amare Stoudemire. Toney Douglas, PG, 6-1, Florida State (first round, 29th overall) -- Tough as nails two-way guard who fills a key third-guard role, especially if Nate Robinson is let go.
FREE AGENT FOCUS: Following standard operating procedure, the Knicks initiated qualifying offers to restricted free agents David Lee ($2.6 million) and Nate Robinson ($2.9 million). The move ensures the players remain restricted property of the Knicks in free agency. Neither are expected to accept their respective offers. Also, in another anticipated move, Eddy Curry picked up his $10.5 million player option for the 2009-10 season. He has an early termination option ($11.2 million) for the 2010-11 season, as well.
PLAYER NEWS:
--C Eddy Curry has remained dedicated to his offseason fitness regimen but continues to draw negative attention to himself for all the wrong reasons. Last week Curry was driving in a car with a few other friends, including Nuggets G J.R. Smith, and had a live webcam going on the dashboard when the car was pulled over for excessive speed. Neither Curry, nor Smith, were driving, but during the traffic stop the camera remained on and Curry seemed entertained by the trouble. At one point, he offered $1,000 to anyone in the car who had the nerve to run out and touch the police cruiser. It is hardly a major offense, but the lack of maturity on the part of the 25-year-old big man remains a critical issue and concern for the Knicks.
--C Darko Milicic was in Serbia when he heard he had been traded to the Knicks for G Quentin Richardson. Milicic's wife, Zorana Markus, is due with the couple's first child.
MEDICAL WATCH:
--F Danilo Gallinari (back surgery) continues to improve as he says he is pain-free and is now participating in some very light basketball-related activities (mainly shooting). He is expected to be with the summer league team in Las Vegas later in July, but will not play.
--F Wilson Chandler (bone spurs) has continued his rehabilitation and is expected to be ready for training camp.
