New York Knicks Roster Report 2008-07-31

New York Knicks Roster Report 2008-07-31
DRAFT PICK:

Danilo Gallinari, SF, 6-9, Italy -- The fans weren't happy and he undoubtedly is a project, but the Knicks insist the 19-year-old is the real deal.

BIGGEST NEEDS: Now that Chris Duhon is signed, the Knicks have a capable ball-handler to step in should they decide to let Stephon Marbury go. Since they aren't likely to deal Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph, it wouldn't hurt to bring in a big man who's known to be active defensively.

FREE AGENT FOCUS: Getting under the salary cap is a priority for new team president Donnie Walsh, but he's going to have to wait. He won't be shedding a lot of salary this summer by letting the likes of Fred Jones and Randolph Morris hit the free agent market.

PLAYER NOTES:

--F Danilo Gallinari had an uneven Knicks debut. He was scoreless in the first half against Cleveland in an NBA Summer League contest, but came back after the break with a 14-point outburst. The constant banging with Robert "Tractor" Traylor resulted in a sore back that resulted in the No. 6 pick sitting out the last four games.

--F Renaldo Balkman was only going to play a couple of games during summer league, but he wound up on crutches after the first game with a sprained left ankle. It's not considered a major issue for the energetic forward, who missed a majority of training camp with a right ankle injury last year.

--F Wilson Chandler enjoyed a productive summer league. He averaged 16.2 points and 7.8 rebounds. The second-year forward shot 47 percent from the field over the five games as well, and might challenge for the starting job at small forward when camp opens.
